Former Celtics.com reporter Emily Austen got fired from her current job as a Fox Sports Florida reporter in yet another example of people in the media not taking Dave Portnoy’s Barstool Sports seriously.
On Thursday afternoon, Austen made an appearance on Barstool’s first ever Facebook Live Rundown and proceeded to make a handful of insensitive comments. Less than 24 hours later Fox Sports Florida senior vice president Steve Tello confirmed that the company is aware of Austen’s comments and that “she is not scheduled to appear on any upcoming Fox Sports Florida or Fox Sports Sun broadcasts.”
Portnoy (who responded to Fox Sports Florida’s action with this video), Big Cat, and KFC all throw around jokes that can easily be taken as fireable offenses, but the difference is that they work for Barstool and Barstool seemingly beats to a different drum.
My problem with the whole situation comes in the fact that Austen loses her job and damages her reputation as a journalist over a few ill-advised comments like this, yet the man who is the Republican nominee for President of the United States (what many people consider the most important job in the world) makes crude and racist comments on a daily basis and America is seemingly OK with it? Let’s hold everyone to the same standards.
And if the media world couldn’t get any more whacky, Gawker Media (who owns Deadspin) just filed for bankruptcy
