Carson Smith Done for the Season

Really hate to see this.  When everything outside of Clay Buchholz seems to be going right for the Red Sox, they get hit with the news that their prized reliever Carson Smith will be shelved for the rest of the season after he undergoes Tommy John surgery today.  Tommy John surgery.  The three most dreadful words in baseball.

Smith had only three appearances this season with a 0.00 ERA and two strikeouts.  He was placed on the 15-day disabled list and I fully expected him to come back, but it seems the elbow discomfort was worse than Red Sox Nation thought.  In his first appearance in Chicago against the White Sox, he had some great movement on his pitches.

It’s easy to say now, but the Red Sox could really use Wade Miley in what’s shaping up to be a very bland starting rotation for Boston.  Miley, who the Red Sox sent to Seattle for Smith, has gone at least six innings in his last six starts and hasn’t let up more than four runs since his last start of April.  Maybe next year, we’ll get to see more from Smith, but for now Wade Miley gets the last laugh…
