I knew it last Tuesday night. Watching that Royals vs. Athletics Wild Card game I just had a feeling Kansas City was making a run in these playoffs. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If your team has enough comebacks and late game wins you’ll win big games (See: 2013 Red Sox).
But then you take a step back and you don’t know whether to throw up or laugh. Back in 2001, 2002, 2003 when the MLB was at its peak (at least in my life time) the Orioles and Royals sucked. Like they were disgustingly bad.
2001 MLB Final Standings:
Royals: 65-97 and 26.0 games back of 1st place in AL Central
Orioles: 63-98 and 32.5 games back of 1st place in AL East
This wasn’t even the worst of Kansas City. Mike Sweeney and the God awful Royals of the mid 00’s annually lost 100+ games.
You have to love Bud Selig and the revenue-sharing he and his cronies created. The Yankees paying more of the Marlins team salary than the Marlins owners did back in 2003. The Rays using everyone else’s money to beat the Red Sox in the 2008 ALCS. The Royals playing the Orioles for a chance to play in the 2014 World Series. This is fitting for the commissioner’s final season. It’s the MLB he has always wanted and you wanna know what? I actually kind of want to watch it.
